Over the years we have heard from ministries in Spanish-speaking countries and Spanish-speaking churches across the United States that are grateful for the Spanish-language resources Songs for Saplings provides. These songs are being shared through mission work, sung in churches and homes, and used in classrooms throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

Missionaries and ministry leaders use the music to share the truths of Scripture with children and families. Churches use the songs to support biblical teaching, teachers bring them into their classrooms, and parents sing them with their children at home. Wherever the music is used, the hope is the same: that children will know and love God’s Word in a language that feels like home.

In this month’s newsletter, we are sharing a few of the other ways these Spanish-language songs are serving families, teachers, and communities. At Songs for Saplings, we don't always know where the songs will travel once they are available. Sometimes, the possibilities extend into places we never would have expected. 

From One Home Into a Community

We start the journey with the Henry family.

The Henrys 13-year-old daughter was adopted from Colombia, and they are currently in the process of adopting another child from Colombia. Living in the Bronx, their family is also surrounded by a predominantly Hispanic community.

Her parents immediately saw the potential for these songs in their own home. They told us their family can use the songs for “family worship ideas, and teaching our daughter Christ-centered worship songs that are child friendly.”

Then they looked beyond their own family. “Given that we live in the Bronx, I can see the value of this resource shared for our predominantly Hispanic community.”

A resource discovered by one family beyond that home, shared with another parent, a church, a school, or a community. 

Keeping a Family's First Language

Hundreds of miles away in Virginia, sisters Sammy and Sophie Salmeron first encountered Songs for Saplings through their church choir.

Their choir director sent an email sharing that Songs for Saplings was looking for Spanish-speaking children interested in participating in the upcoming Spanish recording of Questions with Answers Volume 2. The choir director shared her own appreciation for the work Songs for Saplings is doing to record Scripture-based music in many languages.

The family sent recordings of Sammy and Sophie singing, and soon the sisters will now participate in the Spanish recording of Questions with Answers Volume 2. 

Their parents, Sam and Seneida, are originally from El Salvador, and raising their daughters as bilingual is important to them. “Hearing our daughters singing in Spanish makes us feel proud of them,” their family shared. “We always wanted them to be bilingual and keep our first language in our family.” Songs for Saplings has given the girls another opportunity to practice that language.

But the words they're learning aren't simply Spanish vocabulary.

They are also learning Scripture.

“SFS Spanish has helped them not only practicing Spanish vocabulary through the songs but also memorizing Scripture while singing.”

Their parents have watched their daughters learn about God's Word through something they already love doing, singing. The question-and-answer format of Questions with Answers has been especially meaningful to their mother because the answers are based in Scripture.

For this family, Spanish is part of their heritage, but they are also excited that biblical truth is being passed down.

The Salmeron Family

From Ministry to the Classroom

Diana first encountered Songs for Saplings while doing ministry in the United Kingdom after a friend introduced her to the music.

Today, she teaches high school Spanish full-time at a Christian school in Jacksonville, Florida. She also advises the elementary Spanish teacher, and she helps with children's programs on mission trips for her church.

Her students are beginning Spanish learners, and Songs for Saplings in Spanish is a great resource for them. 

It's another setting in which these translations have the potential to serve more than one purpose. Students can encounter Spanish while also encountering the truths of Scripture.

Why Pass These Songs Along?

A song written to teach a child theology can find its way into family worship, a Spanish classroom, a children’s ministry, or a gathering of families.

In Deuteronomy 6:6–7, God tells His people: “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children.”

The passage goes on to describe God’s Word being shared throughout everyday life—at home, along the way, at the end of the day, and when a new day begins. 

Music gives families and teachers a natural way to do just that.

Two sisters can practice their parents’ first language while memorizing Scripture. A family can bring Christ-centered songs into worship at home. A teacher can help students learn Spanish while introducing them to biblical truth.

These are ordinary places—homes, classrooms, churches, and gatherings of families—and they are wonderful places for God’s Word to take root.

And that is at the heart of Questions with Answers.

More Songs in Spanish

Songs for Saplings exists to help children know and love the truths of Scripture through music. Translation allows those truths to be sung and understood in the languages children and families use every day.

The Spanish Questions with Answers music is already finding its way into homes and communities, but we have many more songs still to translate, record, and share.

Right now, work is underway on Questions with Answers Volume 2 in Spanish.

The next album will give Spanish-speaking families, churches, teachers, and ministries even more Scripture-rich music to use with the children they serve. And, as these stories remind us, we may never know all the places those songs will eventually go, and you can be part of that work!
